Pomerol is the smallest of the fine wine appellations in Bordeaux and is located in the Libournais region on the Right Bank. The wines produced here are based predominately on Merlot, with Cabernet Franc playing a supporting role. The soils have a higher content of clay than on the Left Bank which is suitable for the Merlot variety. Whilst it is now one of the most prestigious of the Bordeaux AOC, this reputation is fairly new, dating to the second half of the twentieth century. The reason behind this recent success is that at the time of the 1855 classification there were no châteaux included from the Right Bank. There is no internal classification within Pomerol but the uncrowned king is Château Pétrus.
