PSS Mechanical Seal - Shaft Seal - Axis 30mm Ast. 2" 1/4 PSS mechanical seals are the benchmark product in the industry, installed by leading yacht builders and found on light military vessels around the world. In Italy, PSS is the standard seal used by the Coast Guard and Guardia di Finanza. It does not require any maintenance and its proven operational life easily reaches 40,000 hours. It is undoubtedly the most advanced technical solution in the industry and is the most economical choice in vessel operation. COMPONENT DESCRIPTION High-density carbon-graphite stator This static ring, made using a special technology, has a roughness of less than 1 thousandth of a mm and can withstand temperatures of up to 260°C, thus guaranteeing safety even in emergency conditions (dry running). Stainless steel rotor Mounted on the propeller shaft, it is locked by a pair of double screws for maximum safety. After only a few minutes of operation, the carbon stator completes the perfect smoothing of the ring, guaranteeing optimal and long-lasting operation of the coupling. The perfect seal of the ring on the propeller shaft is guaranteed by a double nitrile "O ring". Rubber sleeve This part has a dual function: A) to guarantee watertightness B) to ensure correct preloading of the carbon-steel coupling. Its chemical composition and mechanical construction guarantee excellent performance, enabled by - insensitivity to common chemical agents, particularly petroleum derivatives. - ability to function at temperatures between -50°C and +150°C. - dimensional stability and constancy of the axial preload. Double stainless steel clamps are present on both ends for a perfect seal against water PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION Opposition to water ingress is created by the contact of the surface of a stainless steel ring, integral with the propeller shaft and therefore rotating, opposed to a ring of special carbon-based material, integral with the through-hull housing. The working surfaces are lapped to very fine tolerances and a specially interposed water film allows them to "rub" against each other without wear. The correct pressure between the surfaces is generated by a special rubber bellows, preloaded to a specific value. The seal is insensitive to movement and vibration of the axle line. The result is 100% watertightness without any maintenance.
